Czech Tatiana Detlofson gets ninety percent of the credit from the gang behind Kon-Tiki, for the film ended with both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.
It is not the easiest of jobs to promote films from European countries that some Americans may never have heard of, especially to the Hollywood industry. But that hasn’t deterred the Czech-born publicist, Tatiana Detlofson (pictured), from giving it all she’s got. And the results show.
Previously, the 500-member committee had been divided into four groups, but this year there are only three, which means each group has more films to watch, according to awards consultant Tatiana Detlofson, who reps some of the 71 entries this year.
As for the bounty of foreign-lingo offerings (which make up roughly 80% of the fest’s slate), the Academy announced its shortlist on Dec. 21, which dampens things for those no longer competing. “There will only be nine happy filmmakers (still competing), while the other 30-plus will just be showing their film for a festival audience,” says publicist Tatiana Detlofson, who repped five films in the foreign race, only one of which is still in the running.
Today on the Film Promotion podcast we have a guest, Tatiana Detlofson, owner of MEDIAPLAN PR, who is known for her work on the movie "Tangerines," a Golden Globe and Oscars campaign.
We then hired a publicist to handle our awards nomination campaign. Of all the teams we interviewed, Tatiana Detlofson of MEDIAPLANpr had the most compelling strategy and was already a huge fan of the film. Tatiana suggested that instead of taking the traditional route and spending gobs of money on trade ads and gala events, that we position the film as a candidate for the Executive Committee's choice for the nomination and offer many screenings to members of this committee.
“A decent campaign is $50,000,” said Tatiana Detlofson, a Los Angeles publicist who has been handling foreign Oscar campaigns for 13 years, including five this season. “The really good ones, from countries like Belgium or Germany, are $100,000.
“The promotion of the films begins the moment they are submitted,” says L.A.-based film publicist Tatiana Detlofson, who runs MEDIAPLAN PR, a publicity company that specializes in foreign-language Oscar campaigns.
Producer Ivo Felt says Tatiana Detlofson did half the job for success of "Tangerines" in America.
